Being almost midway through the regular season of the centennial NFL campaign, we bring you the look at the standings after six weeks and our thoughts on which teams have the potential to go all the way in the 2020 winter play-offs. New England Patriots entered the season as the reigning champions and they were in the narrowest choice for defending the crown before it all began in September.
Six weeks later, the Patriots established themselves as the lone contenders following their incredible spell of form at the start of the season. They stormed their way to a perfect 6-0 record as the away fixture at Buffalo Bills represented their only serious test en route to perfection. Can they stay impeccable and go 16-0 by the end of the regulation?

New England’s dominance
Bill Belichik and Tom Brady wrote history in the league which saw so many roller-coaster campaigns for all other teams in the last three decades. To show you how huge the Patriots’ results in recent years were, we will go back to 1990 when the 12-team play-offs format has first been introduced.
Since then, at least four of twelve teams managed to enter the post-season having previously missed out on a play-offs spot. The previous year was specific in particular as it saw as many as seven of teams who endured underwhelming campaigns in the 2017 term make it to the play-offs.
Now, the Patriots are a mere contrast to such rule. Tom Brady has been around for 18 years as the team’s quarterback and New England have won the divisional title as many as 16 times in the process. The team made it to the Super Bowl on nine occasions and won the season-end dance whopping six times along.
The 2018 Season
As mentioned above, the Patriots claimed the title last time out. They did so by producing one of the best defensive displays Super Bowl has ever witnessed, holding Los Angeles Rams to just three points in the entire game. The defensive clash ended in a 13-3 victory for New England.
Instead of such a low-scoring affair, we could have witnessed the huge offensive shoot-out between the Chiefs and the Rams there had Kansas City defeated New England in the AFC title match. The Chiefs enjoyed a stellar campaign with the MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes at the helm. They were just moments away from snatching a massive victory over the Pats, but their late interception call was ruled out for an alleged offside that sent New England to the Super Bowl after the overtime. Kansas City and Los Angeles Rams have previously delivered the best match of the entire season (ended 54-51).
MVP Award Odds
Patrick Mahomes was the league’s leading quarterback in numbers. He threw 50 touchdown passes in his first full NFL season and he brought the crowd into delirium on so many occasions with no-look passes that won so many affairs for the Chiefs in the previous term. Mahomes entered the new season without any injury concerns and was the main candidate to defend the MVP title. However, the Thursday night win away at Denver Broncos changed the entire course of the season for the Chiefs. Their key man suffered a kneecap dislocation in a match that saw him become the youngest player ever to reach 7,500 passing yards in his career. He will certainly miss some fixtures to come as the recovery period is yet to be announced.
Mahomes thus went from the main favorite to the third as he is now huge +700 to win the back-to-back MVP awards. Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson is the man to be backed in such circumstances. He is enjoying the best-ever start to the season in his career with an amazing 12-0 ratio between touchdowns and interceptions in the opening six weeks. He has a passer rating of 126.3 at the moment. His campaign of superlatives reached the culmination with a stellar showing in the victory over the Super Bowl finalists Los Angeles Rams. He completed four touchdown passes and had an incredible 151.8 player rating on the occasion. The red-hot Wilson has definitely been the competition’s stand-out performer after the opening six rounds and we fancy him as the main pick for the MVP award at +150 odds with bet365NJ.
Houston Texans have a star of their own in the like of Deshaun Watson who is now the bookies’ second favorite for the MVP. He defeated Mahomes in the recent clash in Kansas City, guiding the Texans to a scintillating victory which moved them to the very top of the AFC South standings. He is probably the most pleasant surprise of the season following a dismal campaign the quarterback had last time out.
*Our Pick – Russell Wilson @ +150 with William Hill NJ
Super Bowl Winner Odds
New England Patriots have been by far the most impressive team in the initial six weeks of the 2019 campaign. They marched to an easy 6-0 record led by the best defensive line in the competition. The Pats allowed only 48 points through six rounds and are on pace to break the league’s record with the fewest conceded points in a regular season.
On top of the rock-solid defense, Bill Belichik and his troops are clinical at the opposite end as well. Only Kansas City Chiefs have managed to score more points than them so far in the season. In-form Buffalo Bills provided the only true test to New England’s impeccable record so far, but the Pats’ defense kept them at bay guiding the team to a 10-16 win on the road. With Tom Brady’s experience and Belichik’s expertise, we can’t see who could possibly beat them in the post-season. It is no wonder the Patriots are +250 favorites to win the 7th Super Bowl title in the Belichik-Brady era.
We will add more flavor to the regular season whilst enjoying the Pats’ incredible run of form with the massive bet backing them to finish the campaign without a single defeat (a 16-0 record) at the sky-high +600 odds with BetMGM.
New Orleans Saints are the second favorites at this stage of the campaign according to the bookmakers. They can be backed at +600 to go all the way. The team won five of the opening six games of the season, but they have already shown signs of weaknesses early on, falling 27-9 away at Los Angeles Rams in Week 2. Given they failed to score more than nine points against the Rams, it is hard to imagine them producing in a potential Super Bowl clash with the Patriots. Furthermore, their star quarterback Drew Brees has skipped three successive matches through injury, each of which the Saints have won, though.
Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers complete the list of five main contenders. The Chiefs will depend largely on the physical condition of Patrick Mahomes following his knee injury. The Packers have been too easy to break down defensively so far, especially when going up against more talented attacking lines which is why we don’t quite see them as genuine candidates in spite of a 5-1 record after six rounds.
The 49ers are the most pleasant surprise of the campaign. Aside from the Pats, they are the only unbeaten team in the league. Such an impeccable record is worth respecting if we know that San Francisco have had a complicated schedule with fixtures against the likes of Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams through the inaugural six weeks. They have been particularly impressive defensively, having allowed just ten points in matches against the Browns and the Rams. In our eyes, they could be worth backing as the dark-horse favorites at the +1,200 odds.
Our Picks:
*New England Patriots to win outright @ +250 with Draftkings
*San Francisco 49ers to win outright v +1200 with William Hill NJ.
Special Bets:
*New England Patriots to finish the regular season with a 16-0 record @ +600 with BetMGM.
AFC Conference Odds
After a stellar start to the 2019 campaign, the New England Patriots went down to being -131 favorites to top their respective conference with William Hill NJ. They have dominated the conference recently having won it in four of the last five years. They have 11 AFC titles in history, more than any other team in the league. The reality is that only Kansas City Chiefs have the capacity of holding them down in the projected replay of the AFC final at the beginning of the next year. Nonetheless, the Chiefs have already struggled with losses to the likes of Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans even with Patrick Mahomes in the squad. There is a big question of Mahomes’ form after the return from the knee injury which is why we have serious doubts about Kansas City making it to the conference final after all.
Houston Texans earned themselves a huge contender status by beating the Chiefs on the road in the fifth round. If quarterback Deshaun Watson is to continue with his splendid spell of form and if he avoids being sacked on too many occasions (he suffered way too many sacks in the previous campaign), the Texans might just get in the race for the potential AFC final quest against the Pats. Houston are now at whopping +1000 odds to win the conference. We have to say Houston have never been a Super Bowl contestant, one of just three AFC outfits. Can they make this a breakthrough year?
Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts are also among the main options according to the bookmakers, but we honestly don’t quite see them threatening the aforementioned teams.
Our pick:
*New England Patriots to win the AFC @ -131 with bet365 NJ
NFC Conference Odds
New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams began the season as the co-favorites in the NFC. However, the Rams are struggling badly to find the right form after losing the previous Super Bowl final to New England Patriots. They are at 50% with three wins and losses apiece after the opening six rounds of the new campaign and they will hardly cope with red-hot divisional rivals San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks by the end of the regular season.
The Saints’ ambitions suffered a massive blow with the Drew Brees injury, but his replacement Teddy Bridgewater looks to be enjoying his time on the pitch. The team have won each of three games with Bridgewater at the helm. The streak included fixtures against Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars. Sean Payton’s troops are +320 to win the conference with Draftkings after a 5-1 record in the opening six outings.
They will have a huge competition in the likes of San Francisco 49ers whose impeccable run saw the odds offered for them to win the NFC reduce from +2000 to +580 at William Hill NJ after 6th round. Green Bay Packers are second favorites, but we have to say no NFC North team have won the conference since their 2011 campaign. It is interesting to mention that only one team have defended the NFC title since 1999 (the Seahawks in 2014 and 2015). This does not quite go in favor of the Rams who have gone to a slow kick-off to the season anyways.
Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys can all be a threat on their days, but we only consider the Seahawks as the genuine candidates for a surprisingly deep run thanks to stellar displays from their quarterback Russell Wilson in six weeks so far. They are at 5-1 record, but still sit a single victory behind the ‘Niners atop the NFC West.
NFC West might just be the division to give us the new conference champions as we’ll be brave and go with either San Francisco 49ers or Seattle Seahawks to go all the way to the Super Bowl.
Our picks:
San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC @ +600 with Draftkings
Seattle Seahawks to win the NFC @ +1000 with Draftkings
